L’Auberge Del Mar

L’Auberge Del Mar: Opulence by the Sea

Once upon a time in a charming village by the sea was a hotel that attracted celebrities who wanted luxury with an ocean view and quick access to the Del Mar Fairgrounds. L’Auberge Del Mar is now located at the spot where The Stratford Inn was built in 1910 when Hollywood greats like Lucy and Desi Arnaz came to soak up the sun and bet on horses.

Since those glamor days, The Stratford Inn was demolished and in 1989, L’Auberge Del Mar was born. L’Auberge Del Mar offers guests everything desirable in a vacation location: walking distance to town and the beach, awe-inspiring ocean views, and unrivaled amenities. The hotel was designed to honor the 1940’s glamor of Del Mar with a European flare obvious in its chateau-like architecture. Del Mar City Beach is known as one of the best beaches in San Diego and it is accessed right in front of L’Auberge Del Mar.

The property is a prime example of luxury meets sustainability, designated as an Ocean Friendly California resort by the Surfrider Foundation. They provide complimentary Zybra beach cruisers for a spin along the beach or through town so you don’t have to use your car. Food served at L’Auberge is made with locally grown produce and the kitchen is equipped with 100% recycled flooring, lighting, and equipment.

Take a day to yourself and enjoy the award-winning beach house-style 5,000-square-foot spa, Spa L’Auberge, named Condé Nast Traveler’s Top 25 Spas in the US. At the spa, relax and enjoy treatments such as the Coastal Sea Salt Glow and the Ocean Detox Wrap. Then take a nap by the pools on comfortable sofas and in cabanas where you will be offered delicious snacks like herb guacamole and chips and frozen blood orange juice.

An exciting addition to L’Auberge is the beautiful new restaurant, Adelaide, that took over Kitchen 1540 several years ago. The restaurant features comfortable chairs overlooking the ocean and a worldly chef whose accolades are many and include working at a three-star Michelin restaurant. Adelaide is seafood-focused and guests delight in delicacies such as aged beef tartare and heirloom pumpkin risotto. Chef Nick Green says his menu is a reflection of his life and travels.

“If Green keeps conceiving dishes that are not only daring but as successful as those on his current menu, he will carve a lasting place for the restaurant in the beachside burg and the hearts of local epicures,” said Ranch & Coast Magazine.

Under the latest multi-million dollar renovations, the hotel has opened a new 24-hour fitness center that includes Peloton spin bikes, state of the art treadmills and workout equipment. In addition, the renovation included a new coffee bar, Lyric Coffee, featuring Bird Rock Coffee.

L’Auberge Del Mar is truly a special gem in San Diego, drawing visitors from around the world to its opulence. The hotel has received numerous awards over the years, including being named number one hotel in Southern California in the Condé Nast Traveler 2016 and third place in 2021.
