Welcome To

Del Mar

Del Mar is the closest you will come to finding a true village atmosphere in coastal San Diego County.

Welcome to Delmar

The word Del Mar means “from sea” in Spanish, which is why this name was the perfect choice to give to a beautiful village that sits on the shores of the Pacific Ocean 20 miles north of San Diego.

In the 1940s, Del Mar was the summer playground for Hollywood stars like W.C. Fields, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Red Skelton, Ava Gardner, and Dorothy Lamour who came to enjoy the beaches, Del Mar Racetrack, and old European charm.

Today, around 4,200 people call this quaint town covering 2.2 square miles, home. The community of Del Mar is primarily single-family residential neighborhoods, retail and restaurants, a small commercial area, and several hotels. A hotel worth noting is L’Auberge Del Mar, which is now located at the spot where The Stratford Inn was built in 1910 L’Auberge was designed to honor the 1940’s glamor of Del Mar with a European flare obvious in its chateau-like architecture. Del Mar City Beach is known as one of the best beaches in San Diego and it is accessed right in front of L’Auberge Del Mar.

While the number of residents in Del Mar is small, the visitors are plentiful with up to two million visitors coming from around the world to enjoy the perfect weather and sandy beaches.
